2005 Rear Disc Brake Replacement Question please

Hi,

I've started noticing a squealing noise from the rear passenger side of my 05 T B EXT. This noise will go away once i press the brake pedal. I've check the pin that rubs against the rotar to signal replacement of disc pads, this looks like the source of the squeal, but i haven't taken the wheel off yet to further inspect. BTW, just of 48,000 plus miles.

I'm a backyard mechanic as I have a 60 el camino and a 2000 Z-71, Both of which I have done my own brake job.

Are there any gotcha's that I should be aware of for this 05 TB Rear Brake Job?

Napa has these rear pads for 58 bucks too.

No big deal here, I put rotors on mine they were pretty rusted on the inboard side, of course I live in upstate NY. You may want to open the bleeders to collapse the caliper pistons . Good time to clean up and adjust the parking brakes also. Ceramics are recommended here.

I know the ceramics last longer and brake better, but do they run hotter?

Yep, I got hooked on ceramics about 4yrs ago. I have the best luck with brake parts from Carquest or Napa. I'll usually get their house brand ceramic pads and their basic Chinese rotors or drums. IMO, no sense in getting high dollor rotors/drums living in the Buffalo NY area.

The rear brakes have now been inspected an appear to have about 6,000 miles left on them. The metal piece that makes contact with the rotor IS NOT touching the rotor. Squeling source is still unknown.

Local auto shop wanted to charge me for breaking everything else down to check the emergency brakes. I declined figuring this is something I could do myself.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the inboard side of things that could cause my intermittent squeling, perhaps something in the emergency brake?

Maybe the inside pad is down?

Taz, seeing as you live in GA, corrosion probably isn't too big a problem for you like it is for me in Buffalo , but @ close to 50Kmi, it sounds like you wont know what's going on until you pop a caliper off and see what's going on with both side of the rotors, pads, etc. Like Max says, the insides typically take the brunt of the wear. The GMT360 chassis also has a caliper bracket that needs to be removed before the rotor will release from the hubs. The brackets are held to the knuckes with 2 big hex head bolts.

This Saturday is nothing but rain rain and more rain down here in Atlanta, so it will be a good time for me to pull apart the rear brake system for a deep inspection. As I reassemble, I will clean and lube all applicable parts.

I will post my findings here.

I've noticed a jangling, kinda squealy sound from the pass side of my 02 4WD TB also, especially with the pass window down and driving next to a wall or through an underpass, for some time now. At first, I thought it might be a brake issue, but I have come to believe it is a resonant noise from the intermediate steering shaft. GM has had nothing but problems with this inane design since day one on all the full-size trucks and some of their cars. The TB shares this design, and there is little that can be done about it. There are bulletins out, and GM has tried several fixes, but sadly none apply to the TB. I've grown accustomed to it, especially if I blast the radio...haha.
