Question bad turbo?

the other day my car started smoking really badly. i thought it was the pvc vaulve because oil was being pushed out the filler cap. so i replaced that and it still was smoking. then i pulled a hose off my Y pipe and noticed it was filled with oil. so i figured it was a bad turbo. so i pulled the hoses off both turbos. and neith have any shaft play and both will spool up (if hit with the compressor) so i dont know whats wrong. think a turbo is still blown just very good at hiding it? or something else?

yes there is oil in the y pipe. but it traveled up from one of the turbos. i believe the back one. the car has been sitting for 4 years and i drove it once or twice when i first got it started to make sure everything was ok and i think thats when a oil line might have got clogged from the old oil and possably made the turbo get oil but not let it return through the return line. but i dont know if its possable for oil to leak from a turbo and the turbo still be good

Re: bad turbo?

The bearings could still be good, but the seals bad from sitting for so long. That would cause oil in the intake and maybe the exhaust yet the turbo will still work.

what seals do you mean? like were are they at so i can replace them to be safe. or are they not replaceable? would it be better off to just get the turbos and oil lines from 3sx? might take me a wile but if its worth it ill save for it

Re: bad turbo?

the seals are the large o-rings. i'm not sure if you can get the seals individually, but they always come in a turbo rebuild kit.

here is a good write-up on rebuilding a turbo.
