Question Taurus Tranmission Identification

Is there a way to tell with the VIN what transmission this car is supposed to have in it from the factory? We pulled a AX4N out of the car and Ford is telling me it should have a AX4S. I want to avoid this on future repairs. The door tag says its a trans (L) Does anyone know how I can decode the vin and find out what trans it should have. I searched the forum and didnt find a way Thanks - JT

Re: Taurus Tranmission Identification

"L" is ax4s,, "X" is ax4n as far as I know, nothing in the vin to identify trans

So is a AX4S and an AXOD the same transmission as in interchangeable? - JT

Re: Taurus Tranmission Identification

AXOD and AXOD-E are not interchangeable, -E is electronically controlled.

Re: Taurus Tranmission Identification

The ax4s was the former axod.. the ax4s may say "axod metric" on the cover

You're quite welcome JT and glad we were able to assist. Here's a good tip. This forum has a marvelous search engine, go top right and BINGO! I punched in, "taurus transmission swap," and found the thread for you. The forum has been around so long almost every topic imaginable has been discussed so using the search engine usually gets you a lot of info.
