Shaking Steering Wheel when exiting freeway

Hi there, i have a 92 Cherekee Laredo, 6 cyl, automatic, 4 door, and lately i am experiencing an unusal behavior. When exiting from the freeway where in speed over 50mph and turn the steering wheel a little bit and keep it turned a bit then out of a sudden the steering wheel starts to shake really hard like you enter a bad dirt road and when you hit the breaks and you slown down it stops and then take offs like nothing happened.
Please help me track down the problem and what i need to do to fix it as this was very dangerous and can crash me the next time it happens.
Thank you

Death Wobble or DW.
Search...or go to a Jeep specialist.

Yup, do a search in the Wrangler forums about it.

However, check your alignment and tire balancing first, those alone might clear up the problem.

Also, if you haven't rotated your tires for awhile that may be contributing.

Re: Shaking Steering Wheel when exiting freeway

I replaced the steering stabilizer and the front shocks, after alignment and balanceing of the tires. It just about stopped. I figure the next step will be replacing all the bushing up front. Start small...then go big.

Cool Re: Shaking Steering Wheel when exiting freeway

Have you guys ever noticed if it changes when you have a full tank of gas vs. when the tanks is empty?

That changes the caster angle on the front axle.

I was experiencing exactly same problem (I have 93 same as yours). I am not mechanically inclined at all; here is what my mechanic told me:

-Check the is hydraulic shock & tie rod to front weels..both were changed on mine ($200 repair) it and mine runs fine now.

Hope this helps.

Bob

I just ordered a new track bar. Use an adjustable one if you have a lift.

Re: Shaking Steering Wheel when exiting freeway

Check the tread on the tire"SOMETIMES"tread can shift....or a tire can get out of round...

Make sure all wheel balancing weights are in place...
