just headers?

If i decide that i want to invest 200 big ones in some headers do i have to get a whole new exhaust system to see any inprovement? And is there any real difference between 400$ headers and 200$ headers besides the finish and a brand name?

Re: just headers?

Depends what style you want to go with. They come in 3 basic sizes, shorties, mid-lengths, and longtubes. You'll see the most gains from the longtubes. Price just depends on who you go with. Shorites typically aren't worth anything because they hardly provide any decent gains, especially for the work involved.

What type of car do you have anyways?

Shorty headers are the only ones that will fit the stock y-pipe. The others will require a new y-pipe. But the factory and aftermarket catbacks will work with both y-pipes. And you get what you pay for with most companies. So I'd say that $200 isn't going to get shit for headers.

Re: just headers?

Honestly, the gains on the 3.4 won't be worth it with headers. You'll be very disappointed I think. I say, just save your money and wait til you get a Z. If you want another bolt-on, I'd just go with some sort of catback. Other than that, I think most other affordable mods are a waste for those engines.

Re: just headers?

yeah thats what im figuring. I find it funny when people say that they got 3.4 and want 400whp out of it. The only way your going to get that is by wet shot nitrous and blowing your engine.....My dream car is 02 ss z28 and i found a sts turbo with a 5psi boost that will put it at 450whp...thats what i cant wait for...what do you think about that? i know i will add more to that car and i know i will get it....what do you think i should do to continue on that one?

Re: just headers?

A new ring and pinion shouldn't cost more than $250 I believe. But then there's install (which I highly recommend a shop do for you) which some shops will kill you on labor. With yours being a 3.4, I wouldn't go more than 3.73's, auto or manual. Or you could try and get some 3.42's out of a M6 f-bodu in the junkyard.
