Air Fuel Ratio Gauge Malf????

I just installed an autometer air/fuel ratio gauge in my 98 GTP and i hooked it up to the purple wire off of the O2 sensor. At idle and soft acceleration the lights jump around crazy from extremely lean to a little rich. WHen i step on it, it is steady about mid rich. Whats going on? WHy is it jumping around SOOO much? Is this normal? I hooked it up to the O2 sensor on the downpipe before the cat like i was told... My check engine lights not on and you think it would be if my ratios are jumping around that much...

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Air Fuel Ratio Gauge Malf????

Is it going to lean to rich at idle real quick or is it kind of bouncing from lean to stoich(sp)? If its in the same area, its fine, but if its all over the place, there might be more going on here.

Re: Air Fuel Ratio Gauge Malf????

it will bounce erratically through that range during idle and all throttle positions EXCPET WOT. Then it reads in the rich area steady. I read through a bunch of auto meter stuff and it does say that it should bounce around in this region but its SO bad that its a major distraction while im driving that i cant keep an eye on the road.

Re: Air Fuel Ratio Gauge Malf????

I don't know how accurate(fast) a gauge like that is but if you have ever used an oscilliscope to look at an O2 sensor you will see that at idle and at cruising speeds it will go back and forth from .1 volt(lean) to .9 volt(rich) constantly. When you go to wide open throttle it will stay around around .9 volts because the TPS has just showed that the driver has demanded max output, therefore the engine will run very rich until you let off the throttle.
