Tranny Slippage Focus 02

Hi, I just want to share my joy to the community.

Three days ago, my tranny wouldn't engage at a certain speed (25mph~35mph). If it did, it would give a very quick and powerful thrust that it would create a big noise under. I stopped using it and tried it again last night. It still did the same thing.

This morning, I drained and refilled the transmission oil. My 128K baby is now shifting like new.

Re: Tranny Slippage Focus 02

Here I am again. Heart broken... It didn't fix the problem. OBDII says the solenoid is bad.

I can still drive the car with the O/D on but I can't or don't want to drive it move 55mph at 3000rpm.

I have a feeling that this problem was triggered when I turned on the O/D one day. The next day, I noticed that the shift at 40mph was not smooth.

Anybody has experience replacing the solenoid? Or any thought or suggestion on what I should do?

Thanks...

Re: Tranny Slippage Focus 02

Me again... I dropped the pan last weekend and tested all the solenoids in there. There are 3 identical PWM shift solenoids, 2 identical ON/OFF shift solenoids and 1 EPC solenoid. One of the ON/OFF solenoid has open circuit. The coil must have been busted.
I ordered that part from www.transmissionpartusa.com for $26. I called one of the dealer here and they quoted me $90 for it.
I hope this would fix my problem. Thanks...

Yes! My trans problem is fixed... This time, it is for real... I will post again if it breaks and / or show some photos of how that solenoid looks like and where to look for it.

Re: Tranny Slippage Focus 02

my focus has about 108K miles on it and i just got the same problem... got it scanned and it said that the shift solenoid is malfunctioning... i am buying the part today but i wanted to know how much trouble it is to replace it... every site i go to says it is in the Valve body or in the tranny itself... any way you can tell me how much trouble i will be dealing with on getting this replaced?

Re: Tranny Slippage Focus 02

It wasn't difficult but not quick because you have to drop and reseal the trans pan. Since you already dropped pan, it is wise to drain the rest of the oil and replace it with new.You may have fixed it by now but for future reference, here is what I did.- remove the transmission pan- remove the transmission filter. There are five solenoids: two big ones on one side and three small ones on the other. You will figure out which screws to turn.- take out each solenoid and check its terminals with an ohmmeter. The ones that don't have continuity is bad.- replaced the bad solenoid- replaced the filter with new one.- replaced the pan. I use blue RTV for seal. let it cure for 24 hrs.- Filled/Drained trans oil until it is clean. Draining part is done through the small transmission-radiator hose. Voila! The car has already put 5K miles in it and it still going strong.
