2000 frontier abs

when i hit the brakes in my 4wd frontier king cab, they lock up, the pedal shakes, and what im guessing is the abs unit makes a horrible grinding/whirring motor like sound. what causes this and is there any option to fix it other than replacing the abs unit?

I have this same problem. A mechanic told me it was the ABS module that cost 1500 to replace, I'm not sure if this is accurate or not. Did you figure out a solution?
