Network/SSID problem.

ok, new pc has arrived and everything is hunky dory (it opens 3Dstudio max in about 20 seconds compared to the 70+ seconds of my old machine - haven't tried any hardcore animation rendering yet) and I've been fiddling around trying to get my wireless router to work.

long story short, it (wireless) works but

i) it's not consistant
ii) for some reason when I created my original network ssid (DrunkenMOnkey)and set things up to connect to each other, another ssid was created called NETGEAR (the router brand) that was obviously from my router except I didn't do it, at least not intentionally.

question is, can I get rid of that NETGEAR ssid?
it is appearing on my list of available networks and I've played around with it and I've noticed that I can log on to my proper network when it's wep'ed and the NETGEAR network isn't wep'ed.
It even works the other way around
i.e My network (DrunkenMonkey) is wep'ed and NETGEAR isn't but I can still get onto the NETGEAR network.

what's going on?

Re: Network/SSID problem.

What model Netgear router do you have? And how old is it?

WEP has been proven notoriously insecure, I recommend changing the encryption to WPA-PSK immediately, but if the router is more than about 2 or 3 years old, it might struggle to keep up with the encruption load.

Anyway, reconfigure it not to broadcast an SSID and change to WPA-PSK, and post back if you're still having issues.

Re: Network/SSID problem.

netgear DG834G
and a Belkin wireless adapter on the pc end.

the SSID seems to have resolved itself; it is now only displaying the one Network name from my router.

except now I can't seem to connect to the internet from the router even though it was working fine before/last night (albeit intermittently).
connection to the router is fine and i've gone through the router settings but can't see anywhere that might be preventing the internet connection.

what am i missing?

in the meantime, i'm going out to buy a new lan cable and also give my isp a call to ask about settings.
anything I should ask for?

Re: Network/SSID problem.

Can you access the internet when connected directly to the router with CAT5?

Re: Network/SSID problem.

ok....

after sitting here for two hours inputting and re-inputting the relevent numbers for my ISP, it looks like I'm finally able to connect to the internet through my router.

let's hope this still works tomorrow morning as I have no idea which bit was the bit that wasn't quite right in the first place.
one extra thing has come up now though;
whenever I open firefox (and it seems everytime it sends data - like when I just click on "post" here), it still opens the old dial up dialogue box that refers to the old usb modem.
where/how do I disable this?

nevermind, I found the bit about asking for numbers etc etc in the options but it still sometimes tells me that there's no dial tone...

so...
i'm all set now with my dual monitors so I can pretend to do work at my brand new and still very messy home/office.
all I need now is a wireless print server so I can get rid of that cable as well.
Bloody A3 doesn't fit on my desk anymore....
anyway.
here it is, finally working.
it's not flash and not that tidy (i really need a bigger desk).

now i've only got to get a wireless printer server and a bridge for my PS2/PS3 (eventually)/Wii and I'm sorted.

and i think it's only reasonable to get myself a nice new throne as well.
how's this:
