Tire Size for '02 2wd?

I just read through 4 pages of posts when I searched for this info, so I know this comes up a lot. But it seemed like almost every post asking this question was for a Z71 or a lifted truck.

I have a 2002 2wd. It came stock with 235/75R16 on 16x7 rims. When I bought the truck used, it had 265's on it (75R16 I think). Traction in the rain is getting a little iffy, so I'm looking to buy new tires. I want something just a little bigger, but keep the 16x7 rims (not enough money at the moment for new rims).

Can I fit 275/70R16 on my truck? It is at stock height.

Thanks for the feedback.

I don't think so. I also have an 02 2wd, and I asked the smake question when I bought tires. I was told that 265/75/16 was the biggest I could go. I got BFG A/Ts in that size and they fit perfectly.

265/70/16's are a good fit on a 2wd. Michelin LTX/MS are a dang good all around tire.

Re: Tire Size for '02 2wd?

Those Michelins are what I'm getting. Heard a lot of good things about them. The 265's I have now do fit pretty well, and it looks like I'll have to keep 'em for a while longer.

Thanks guys.

Re: Tire Size for '02 2wd?

I too have BFG AT ta/ko in 265/75/16 on a 2wd 2002 with NO rubbing.

Putting 275's on there means another 10 mm in width; which would mean 5 mm on each side of the tire since it's centered. You say you have 265's on there now; so crank the wheel all the way in a parking lot and see what your inner clearance is.. I'd bet they'll fit width wise. Height wise with both being 75 series you'll gain 3.75mm in height (half of 7.5mm) so I think you're good.

Your profile doesn't state where you are; but any good tire shop (Discount tire here in SD is the only place where I go) would mount 2 for you for your front wheels and let you drive around the parking lot (They don't need to be balanced for this part) and hit a speed bump and turn hard to make sure they don't rub. If they don't; you're golden; if they do, you put on 265/75's which you KNOW will work.

Hope it helps..

Please post back if 2575/75's do work; by summer mine will be ready for new rubber as these bfg's have 60K on them and although they're still 'okay' I think they only have 1 more road trip in them before it's time for me to call them dead.

Re: Tire Size for '02 2wd?

I'm in Austin, Texas. I actually am going to Discount Tire later today to get the tires. I'll ask them for that test fitting.

Thanks, I'll let y'all know.

EDIT: I may have been incorrect originally. My mind is doing circles after looking at all these tire sizes, but I think mine might actually be 265/70/16. That's ok because my DT doesn't have any 275/75/16, only 275/70/16.

I got 275/70 R16 put on today. They fit great. Handling is a lot better and these Michelins are much quieter than the Goodyears I had.
