P0171- did TSB - now misfire on 1 and knock
Hi all. Great forum. I have a 2001 with 120K's. Had the P0171 faults intermittently and kept resetting them. Developed slight knock sound about 100K. Last week, started to shudder and lose power with much louder knocking. Found this forum, did the TSB as described. EGR ports were not too dirty, cleaned everything all the same. Butterfly valves have some black soot on them as well. Reassembled, and now vehicle still shudders (though has more power) and now I have a misfire code on cyl 1. P0171's are gone though. I may have had the misfire fault before the TSB, but I am not sure. They were there after I pulled injector plugs when I first started poking around. I have tried swapping plugs, they were all changed 6 months ago. I am assuming that cyl 1 is the hardest plug at the back left side. Is this right? The knock is quite loud, slightly disappears under high rpm. Under load engine misfires and have spark knock during heavy acceleration.
Without buying any more parts, can the hard knock sound be caused by anything easy such as vacuum leak, bad coilblock/wires etc, or is it indicative of something major like rod or bearing? I have the shop CD, and digimoto, so I can try to ring out the resistance of the wires etc, but even then I am hesitant to throw money at this thing if the knock is the knock of the reaper. Any ideas? All the best and thanks! |

Re: P0171- did TSB - now misfire on 1 and knock
Ok-having read some more around this great forum, the knock comes from the two piece intake baffle. I applied pressure and it disappeared. Phew, that is a scary sound. I will take that apart and glue them. Still at the rough idle, spark knock / misfire though. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and get new coilblock and wires. If I had a vacuum leak. would I get any other codes other than P303 I'm getting?

Re: P0171- did TSB - now misfire on 1 and knock
Looking at my CD - I just found that left and right side plugs are different - ooops, I swapped two when testing. Going back in to skin my knuckles again. If it is misfiring on cyl 1 only and no code for cyl 5, does that rule out the coil block?
