1998 malibu problem! Help!!!
I have a 1998 malibu. My problem is, I will be driving and all of a sudden the gas pedal stops working and the car starts puttering and shaking. If I pump the pedal it jerks a little but will not go. Eventually my speed will slowly decrease until I have to pull over and turn the car off. I wait a minute then restart the car, and everything seems fine again. Like by turning the car off then on again reset something. But a few minutes later the car will start doing it again. It did this a while back, and I put in fuel injection cleaner and the problem stoped for about a month. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe the fuel filter, or fuel pump...... Thanks in advance for all replies.

Re: 1998 malibu problem! Help!!!
I experienced the identical systems. I replaced the fuel filter, fuel injector cleaner, fuel relay and the fuel pressure regulator. All to no avail. Anyway, I decided to replace the fuel pump. My mechanic argued and argued with me. However, I insisted. Have not had a problem since. I also had to replace my ignition coil, but this did not affect acceleration to where I had to pull over or stop. Man, that's embarrising on a freeway feeder road!

I concur with the fuel pump idea. Change your fuel filter and do a fuel pressure test.
