Re: definition

Sigh

I'm going to word this as well as I can without having to go into paragraphs upon paragraphs... Well, the purpose of a "double-clutch" is to basically try and match the speed of the rotating parts of the gearbox, for the gear you wish to select, to the speed of the input shaft being driven by the engine... So that once the speed is matched, the gears are able to engage smoothly, and if the speed is not matched, the teeth will grate while trying to attempt to fit into the holes of a desired gear...

Re: definition

Right ^^ and it is only done during down shifting in modern vehicles (seems to be an important detail to the F&F generation...haha). Modern transmissions have syncros that match gear speeds inside the transmission during upshifts. If anybody wants to elaborate feel free...

Re: definition

Yea, and just to leave out any doubt by the O.P, that can only be done on a manual tranny, hence automatic trannys have it sync'ed in them - much like turtlecrxsi said.

Re: definition

To double clutch you simply push in the cluth with the left foot. bleep and I mean "bleep" ( tap it and release quickly just enough to kick up the revs) the throttle with the right foot. select your gear, and then once the rev climbs and starts to drop again release the clutch to catch the rev.

I do this all the time while down shifting hard or while dropping more then one gear i.e. going from 6th to 4th or 5th to 3rd.
It helps to keep my motor mounts in one piece. Hard downshifting can break alot of shit.
