campus pubs/bars

so as i was pounding a few back with some other engineering students (along with a few "here's to"'s, if you know what that means) at the campus pub, it got me thinking, how many people actually go to these places. i know the one on my campus came up with a $100,000 loss last year.

so what do your campus pubs and such look like? are they fun? strict about certain rules, etc.

the one i was at was Ollie's (also known as olivers), and it was renovated this year. i never got to see the old one but apparently it was pretty grundgy, and apparently it was great. all i hear about now is the suckiness of the new one, stuff like how they didn't have keggs tapped for an engineering event ("engineering event" almost always entails drinking, or at least having a few pints) and how they run out of beer or whatever. the furniture looks like something out of an ikea commercial, the bartenders aren't bad (the one today was HOT)

the thing i find funny about this pub is that it's really easy to drink underage if you want, you just can't buy any alcohol. today i was drinking with friends for a few hours, never got carded, never bought beer. i went to buy the next pitcher and the bar tender asks me for ID, obviously i "forgot it at home" because they have a card reader that won't allow you to use a fake one (i'm 18, drinking age is 19). anyways, i just go sit down, give the money to a friend, he buys it and i have a few. what's the point in investing this money into stoping underage drinking if they're just going to let them get away with it right in front of them without even trying to stop them.

Re: campus pubs/bars

It helps with the liquor licence (apparently shows intention that the host facility has made attempt to prevent underage drinking and can blame the staffer).

Bars usually lose money because:
-Not enough patrons
-They charge the wrong prices ie not enough margin to pay the cost of labour, cost of sales (ie drinks), rent and other fixed costs
-Not enough of the stuff served gets paid for (otherwise known as shrinkage)
-Staff serve too generous a portion
-They don't intend to make money (bad administrators who don't have incentive to try to break even or make a profit...)
-Badly managed, poor training

(PS I work in management of Hospitality so I can be cynical)

Re: campus pubs/bars

Our student bar used to be called the Foundry.

All its stuff was plastic, it was cheap looking, you could buy jugs for 5 or 6 bucks. We'd go on Thursday nights and just drink and dance til closing at about 1.

Over the summer at the end of 05 they renovated it. Now everything's new and flash, and it's called the Common Room. It sucks. Everything's class, expensive, and it's lost its appeal. I miss being able to go in shorts, singlet & jandals...the way it is now you feel like you're obliged to dress up. It's not a student pub anymore, it's like a fancy town club. I miss the grungy, dingy foundry.

And apparently they' ran at a loss for the whole year cos they spent too much money on renovations.

Drink prices went up too (rumour has it because they wanted to discourage binge drinking).

Still, it's nice having mates that work at the bar so we get cheap drinks and free food

Re: campus pubs/bars

The Blue Tic Tavern. (for those outside the US, a Blue Tic is a type of hound dog used for hunting)

It smelled like beer, often had beer sloshing on the floor, was cheap, dark, dirty, dingy, crowded, played great music and had cheap pitchers.

Renovation ruined it totally. It closed a few months after being "upgraded".

Re: campus pubs/bars

We don't really have any bars on campus because they try to deter underage drinking here...

However, in every shopping plaza surrounding the school there are a lot of dirty college bars. Pounders is probably the most well known, and it's dirtier than all the rest. It's really disgusting, but after a few drinks, nobody really cares...

Re: campus pubs/bars

The on-campus bar in Clemson, Edgars, has always been kind of weak. Renovating didn't help any either. The notorious Esso club is like the redneck frat bar across the street from the sports complexes. The rest of the college bar scene is technically off-campus but it's right there. Down the one main street in town you have TD's which is a sports bar. Then there are a couple tiny pubs that house the local old drunks. There is one place called Nicks that is a small pub that most people like for socializing. It's small, old and has a feeling when you walk in that there has been a lot of intellectual conversations over the years as well as car talk. The owner was an SCCA fanatic and helped bring SCCA events to campus... aka "parking lot time battles". Right across the street is the stereotypical frat bar Tiger Town Tavern. Up the street from there is Backstreets which usually houses the local bands and was always a cool scene. There are other restaurant/bars but they're totally mainstream. I remember going to Keith Streets one time for a burger and a beer at the bar and the place filled up with sorority girls. It sounded like the birds in "Finding Nemo"... drove me crazy! Clemson was rated like the number 2 party school in the country a few years back which I found odd because UGA (about an hour or so away) has like 3x as many bars... off-campus). I think Clemson has more hippies though being closer to the mountains. When you've lived around a college community for 13 years you get to know all of it. Haha...

Thats the same for RPI, but much worse. The administration wants to make all Frat houses (on or OFF campus) all but dry. Under the proposal, you can only drink if you are 21+ AND in your room, NOT any public rooms areas such as a living room. Basically they want to reduce the drinking privelages to that of the campus dorms.

Re: campus pubs/bars

wow that really blows, here you can drink anywhere if you're 19+ (legal drinking age) as long as you aren't drinking out of a beer bottle. if you're under 19, you can drink in your room as long as you don't do anything suspicious or stupid enough for campus safety to come in your room, so if your door is open and they see beer bottles or other alcolol they can come in, or if you're being loud or something, but if you're just drinking, you're safe. you can be drunk anywhere as long as you don't do anything stupid enough to warrant them escorting you to your room or off campus.

Re: campus pubs/bars

not on campus but my friends and i go to a bar called the oyster pub. nothing special, but the music is good not to loud and the staff is cool. it's right across from the dance clubs which is good if the girl you're with wants to go dancing.

i'm also in daytona beach which is in the third week of spring break which makes it real cool. meet alot of cool people and always have a good time.

Re: campus pubs/bars

Our student bar got renovated at the end of 05 and they upped the prices. Jugs were something like $5 and now they're $12. They took away the pool tables but at least it no longer looks like a seedy pub. It's quite nice.... if only they could have reasonable prices.

Re: campus pubs/bars

it's good to know the guys who work in the University bars; it means you actually get "clean" drinks.

Re: campus pubs/bars

We have a bunch of bars and pubs a block off from College Ave, which frat row (where all the frat houses are located) is conveniently next to. So I'm pretty sure that the bars around my area don't have much trouble bringing in the customers.
