Here's a GOOD reason to keep your clutch adjusted correctly!

Those who already know this....don't bother to read it.

A couple of years ago we bought a used '93 Geo Tracker with 147,000 miles on it.

The clutch pedal on my wife's Geo tracker just lately started "jumping" or 'clicking' when it was pushed in.

Wasn't the cable....was occurring AT the lever on the clutch Bell.

The throwout bearing had been riding on the flex plate for a long time.....
wore a depression into it!

The shop (Clutchland - Spokane, WA) guy showed me the parts after the $429 clutch job.

He thought my wife had been riding the clutch pedal (which she doesn't do).

He said then the cable adjustment had to have been keeping the Throwout
Bearing pressed against the flex plate (flexible arms the Throwout Bearing
rides on and pushes in).

Anyway - the throwout bearing had worn INTO the flex plates maybe 1 mm
or so and as the clutch pedal was pushed in, the flex plates squeezed the
throwout bearing until it 'popped out" of the hole it was riding in.

The clutch plate itself was down to the rivets, so we needed the repair job anyway.

Point is, if the pedal is not adjusted properly then the throwout bearing will be
forced into the flexplates and wear a ring in the tips. The throwout Bearing
then gets pinched as it pushes the plates in - kinda like pinchers.

Now her car feels "squishie" to her. The guy said, "That's how it is supposed
to feel ! The clutch doesn't need to move so far now that the new plate is in."

He said about an inch of free play at the top end shows the clutch is adjusted
right. If not - the Throwout Bearing wears out the flexplate.

Long story short - have the clutch pedal adjusted yearly! Big bucks if not correct.

Don't let it go like we did....ignorance is very expensive!

PS - he checked The Phoenix's pedal - is fine....whew!

My wife's tracker is now running quieter....!
