2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
Hey.
I'm trying to decide where to place a 12" Infinity sub in a 2002 Chevy Tahoe LS. I'd like to house it in a sealed box and have it as out-of-the-way as possible. A few places that've been recommended are: under the center console, under one of the front two seats (they are mechanical, might not work,) behind one of the rear side panels (don't know about space due to sub and box size) or under the center row seats (they fold down.) it can't go under the third row seats because they are removable (which I do often.) The damn thing is too practical when it comes to space and removing seats making it almost impossible to place a sub in an out-of-the-way spot. Origionally I was going to sell the two 12" Infinitys I have and buy an 8" Infinity because there's a factory 8" sub behind the back driver's side panel that can be easily removed and replaced, but I'm having trouble parting with my 12" Infinitys. Any suggestions or personal experience advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
your options depend heavily on how much customization you are willing to do (have done)

For the sake of wanting more suggestions lets say there are no limits to customization.

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
I have seen the boxes in the center console area ...... I really them, nice bass upfront sound and looks very factory. Another option is to make/fiberglass the box into a side panel in the rear. The typical 3rd option is to make a box/amp combo for the back and make a hookup terminal where the box and wires can be easily removed. I have seen all three of these types in competiton cars.

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
How difficult is the center console mount? Am I looking at hours of work? Would I have to order a custom console (could I build it?) How does the sub fit (verticle, horizontal, right-side-up, up-side-down?)
I have many questions. Any answers would help. Thanks. |

it may be a bit difficult to make it look good too, most of them I have seen have the speaker upside down and a slot port pointing forward.

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
The set-up in the photo looks cool, but the functionality of the vehicle has been changed. Maybe I'm too picky but I want to keep some functionality of the console and put a sub there (not necessarily, could go somewhere else. Suggestions?) The console in the Tahoe is so damn deep I'd think you would be able to have the space you need for the sub while keeping functionality. It's looking more and more like I will have to attempt to cram a 10" where the factory 8" is located.
Additional question: I have XM radio and right now it consists of the receiver magnet stuck to the top of my vehicle with the wire running down the doors frame under the dash and into the XM docking station. The radio runs through an unused FM radio station that is chosen from a list XM provides for your local area. I also have to plug it into a cigarette lighter for power. I'm having issues with reception and am wondering if an FM modulator will fix the problem and am also looking into a hard-wire kit to eliminate the cigarette lighter plug in. Has anyone had expierience with the FM modulator? Will it help reception at all? Will having the radio hard-wired to the car help? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. |

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
What xm unit do you have, mine lets me change the station to whatever i want. ANd i just ran a 1/4-2rca connectr so i could plug the headphone jack right into my HU, so i dont need anything but that wire and i get crystal clear reception.

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
thats a tough one, how much space is under your second row seat? I I were doing it, I would build a flat box to go under it, the only problem is you need 1.25 cubic ft of air space for a sealed box for that sub. the good news is there is no limit on the shape of the box other than accomodating the subs depth

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
I have the XM Dephi SkyFi II. Turns out it has an FM modulator built in. I'm a moron. I don't know why I'm having reception troubles. I may have to order a new receiver/cable.
So with the RCA hook up I won't need to bother with a hardwire kit? Another random question: Can I buy a stock stereo head unit from a Tahoe (2004/2005?) with XM capabilites and install it into my 2002? Would my Tahoe be able to support it? Just curious... Thanks. |

Re: 2002 Chevy Tahoe Sub Placement
For the cable you need a HU that has AUX input, otherwise you have nothing to plug into. AS for the stock radio with XM, im not 100% sure on how that hooks up. Im guessing the antenna goes right into the HU and you tune it from there so you wont need the xm tuner anymore.
