96 Explorer won't start, No fire

I have 96 Ford Explorer V6 today it won't start. It will crank but no fire to start it. Did a test to a spark plug and no fire, replaced Ignition coil still same problem, also checked fuse box. Anyone know what else I need to test. This is the first time this happens.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

The input for triggering the spark is the crankshaft position sensor. You should verify that the CKP sensor is working properly. This is best done with an oscilloscope, but it is possible to use a multimeter, watching for a pulse as the engine is cranking of about 5V in amplitude.

Re: 96 Explorer won't start

I replaced the CKP sensor, now the spark plug have fire. But still won't start. There's no gas and no low hum noise when I turn the ignition. Is this the fuel pump problem now or somwthing else. The truck heater didn't work this winter, only blow cool air, don't know if this have anything to to with this.

Any test I can do next before replacing the fuel pump ?

Thanks shorod for your help.

Re: 96 Explorer won't start

So for the delay in responding. I was on vacation this week, and it was a true vacation -- no Internet access!!!

You can check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail using a fuel pressure tester. Many times you can borrow a fuel pressure tester from your local auto parts store, just make sure it has the Ford adapter (most do).

If you have low fuel pressure, then change the fuel filter if that hasn't been done recently. If it was just changed, then make sure it was installed in the correct orientation (check "flow" arrow).

If you have no fuel pressure, then make sure that the inertia switch for the fuel pump has not been tripped. I believe this is located in the driver's side kick panel on yours, but check the owner's manual to be sure.

If the inertia switch is closed, then check for voltage through the switch to the fuel pump as you turn the ignition key to Run. If you have voltage through the swich and no fuel pressure to the fuel rail, then chances are pretty good the pump is your issue.
