Head lube ;-)
Great title already. Quick question for my head rebuild.
-What's the stuff I need for lube? Is it RTX? Where can I get a lot of that at? Never seen it at AutoZone. -My cams came with a small tube of Crower Cam Lube. Is this the same stuff? -What exactly do I lube? Looks like everything right?

My machinist gave me a little bottle of shit to use when I rebuilt my head. Well, that chinsy ass bottle broke before I even got home leaving green ooze all the hell over my head. I said fuck it and just coated shit up good with engine oil before I started it up, worked fine for me.

But you still have to lube up the cams, valves, and everything.

Oh yeah, I lubed the shit out of everything. Not so much on the head of the valves but I think I got a bit on the stem, made sure there was a bunch all where lifters and rockers were, all over the cam and where the are held to the head etc.

ARP sells lube. I believe its called molly lube. You need a lube that will stay on the parts and not run off like oil will. I lubed all moving parts and all cam journals with the molly lube(very generiously). After it was all together and right before I put the valve cover on I filled it up with oil straight onto the head parts. Just be carefull not to get any oil down the spark plug holes.

 Yes Dave, we are on the same page. The bottle of special lube I got broke open so I threw the rest away and used regular engine oil for the assembly lube.

I use motor oil. These are some 40 years old v8s. Every motor I put together is fully primed the instant it starts up. That being said, I don't use assembly lube, just oil.
The only place I use a special lube is on the ARP head studs. There is a ton of info on my site about that however, so I won't go into it here. It certainly will not hurt to use assembly lube on everything, so if you are anal and things like this give you a haahd-on, go for it.
