Removing oil filter with this doo hicky.

Anyone have experience using this tool? I managed to remove my filter, but not without putting some deep dents into the old one. Good thing my new one doesn't have deep dents, although it does have some dimple. I think I'm somehow using this tool wrong. Next time I'm thinking of just hand tightening it instead of torquing it to the factory specs.

that tool is great for removing the fuel filters on chevy diesels, and the part you twist goes outside the strap, not between the strap and the filter. for your oil filter you can buy a socket that fits the dimples on the edge at the parts store.

BTW, I just changed my oil yesterday evening (reached 600 mi mark), putting 3 quarts and 200 mL.

This morning I couldn't see the oil through the sight hole so I added maybe 400 mL more and now it is full. I am, however, able to see the oil move if I tilt the bike to the left.

You NEVER install an oil filter with a wrench...Sometimes their instructions for tightening are a bit ridiculous. That's because they don't want it to blow off and kill you or ruin your motor, which is understandable, but overtightening an oil filter can cause gasket failure also...

I've seen some people will put a screw-type hose clamp around the filter, in a position where the screw would have to contact the engine case if the filter tried to back off, or if there's no way it can be positioned to interfere with the filter turning, you can wire the screw part of the clamp tightly to something nearby, and that will keep it from backing off also...

That also works in a pinch for getting a stubborn filter OFF, you put a hose clamp around it, tighten, then tap the screw with a driver and hammer, and get it to turn...

and always hand tighten the filter, the pressure in the system will tighten it further so tightening it with a wrench is probably overkill.

The key to either is finesse. I've never had either crush a filter (but the end cap wrench did almost round off an oil filter on my Infiniti). I've never heard/seen one destroy a filter before.

Most filters have the tightening suggestion on the label. For example, AC-Delco spin-on filters suggest pre-lubing the rubber gasket with fresh oil, then tighteneing 3/4 turn by hand after the gasket contacts the engine. I agree with Aussie, 1. never use a tool to tighten the filter, you'll risk damaging the seal or filter and 2. he has unresolved issues,

I agree, but some motorcycle manuals have absurd specs for this...like the Suzuki Intruder manual says hand tight and then 1.5 turns past with a wrench ..that's enough to crush an o-ring....

On my car I always hand tighten it.

In the Kawasaki manual it says to torque the filter to 11-14 ft-lbs, which is quite a lot.

I've already got the filter on so I don't have to worry about it for another 2400 miles. I suppose if I wanted to remove the oil filter, I'd have to drain the oil.

I have been changing the oil in cars for the last 19 years, I always put the filters on by hand without using a wrench and have never had one come off or even leak. Getting them back off is another story.

True enough on cars, but the vibes a bike engine produces tends to work them loose over time in some cases...I've changed oil on bikes where I've found the filter so loose, I could have taken it off with two fingers and thumb ...that's a filter that was about to shake loose...
