Maxima 99 misfires

Hi Folks,
By now this problem is familiar to most readers. I think we all sufferred through the bad coils, and some with bad O2 sensors. Seems like typical problems for this car.

I have had misfiring, and have found a new source of the problem. In my case, the connector to the Crank Angle Sensor is bad. About 1-2 per month, the car will not start, but the starter will turn and turn. Luckily the car is smart enough to not drown in fuel. I just have to "tap" the connect gently, and voila, it works every single time.

Now if only I could buy a new connector !! The dealer won't sell it to me, as only the complete wirng harness is sold as a kit at $1700.00. NO THANKS !!!

This has also begun to happen while driving, so its getting worse. Might go to scrap yard and just salvage one of those, if available.

Anyone else with this problem ?

Cut/Strip/tie-Connect the wires. Solder, if possible. If not, add contact grease. Wrap with self vulcanizig tape. Now its better than new...

I guess adding contact grease into the connector is enough, try that first. See clic http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/14

Re: Maxima 99 misfires

Hi,
I tried cleaning out the connectors with Silicone spray. Once clean, I sprayed both with White Grease. Seems to work. Hopefully the White Grease doesn't cause an open over the long term. The female part of the connector seems to be in pretty good shape, clean ,hardly any visible oxidation. One guess is that the integrity of the mechanical connection within the female assembly is somewhat compromised.

Great link. I'm glad someone is taking the time to document those findings.

Re: Maxima 99 misfires

i just bought a 99 maxima and after a week the engine light came on. took it back and they said it was the #5 coil and they replaced it for me. now 4days out it comes on again. took it to autozone and they say it has to do with the ignition. is this the same problem you are referring to? performance wise it is ok but the code says it is misfiring.

Re: Maxima 99 misfires

It can be, but typically no (if the code is for real). There are six coilpacks which start to go intermittently, die by the mile, typically after 100k. The coilpacks contain electronics which will be fried - needin replacement (great wellthought $ales structure).

Maybe:
- the 'new' one already fails,
- they changed the wrong one or
- now 2to6 are dying?
- the code was lottery miss
- autozone wanted to sell coilpacks

Autozone would be my last zone.

Always demand used spares with u, less stealing...
