1995 Apv 3.1 No Start

I have a 1995 APV that will not start. The other day it died right after I started it. I went to start it again and it wanted to die so I gave it some gas and it seemed to run fine. Then the idle started going erratic. I got it home and put the scanner on it and all of the parameters seemed to be OK. I went to start it this morning and it would crank but not start. After some diagnostics, I am getting spark, the fuel pump and relay are working fine. I back probed the injectors and they are clicking fine. From reading some posts, it is either the ignition module or the ECM. Does the ignition module fire the injectors along with the spark. By mistake or luck, I grounded the green or white wire on the pick-up coil where it plugs in to the ignition module and the injectors clicked. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

When that happened to my van it was the spark plugs. They all needed to be replaced. It would turn over but would not start.

Your description does match the ignitor (ignition module) syndrome...even if you see spark: this problem can be intermittent. At that age, I'd consider having one in stock "just in case" is a must...so replacing it , even if it proves not being the solution, just leaves you with this question off and an inexpensive and valuable spare part. I would not go far away from home without a new one at least in my pocket at that age.
Clicking the injectors with grounding the pickup coil is OK. It thinks it has detected teh engine turning, so it sends fuel.

Re: 1995 Apv 3.1 No Start

I wanted to post the results of my findings, in hopes that it will help others in this forum!! It seems that I had a dieing fuel pump. Gotta love those intermintent problems. While reading other posts, it made sense that if I had spark and I had a good injector pulse, that the pick-up coil and the ignition module were good. That lead me to the fuel pump relay. I back probed the relay and was getting battery voltage and the 5 volts from the ECM which confirms that they were good. I back probed the connector at the body and fuel pump harness and was getting battery voltage there, which lead me to a bad fuel pump. It no longer was doing the 2 second prime when I first turned the key on either. Put a new fuel pump and screen in and it fired right up. I did also put in a new ignition moduel since it had 135K miles on it, yes it was the original GM unit. If there is one piece of advice I can leave to others in this forum, it is to do thorough diagnostics!! Do not take anything for granted!! Do not assume anything!! You must prove or disprove each component in the system. I made the mistake of thinking my pump was good. I did not perform a pressure test. Had I done this in the begining I could have saved myself half of a day on a wild goose chase. Good luck to everyone and I will be more than happy to help any one who has a question. Thanks again!!
