Odometer not working

I have a 1991 Cutlass Ciera, 3.3L V6, and didn't realize right away that the odometer is apparently faulty, as the numbers don't turn. My speedometer works fine, but I have no idea what the true mileage is. Is there a way to check the odometer cable to make sure it's not broken or disengaged before I have to take it to a shop and have them crack it for me?

The guy I bought the car from had apparently decided that everything had to be disconnected for some insane reason, as a lot of things in the car work, they just weren't connected (several fuses missing, the windshield washer hosing just hanging there, all of the doors have the wiring hanging out, although they don't work, and several other things). I'm piecing the car back together a little bit at a time (she's my dream fixer-upper!), and want to do most of the repairs myself. Thanks!

Re: Odometer not working

No odometer cable here, just a Vehicle speed sensor that drives a stepper motors for the odometer, and possibly a seperate one for the speedo. The plastic gears that the odometer uses are probably stripped. Someone here can chime in if that's replacable or if you need another cluster.

Keep in mind if you get another cluster, see if you can get one that has close the same mileage yours does, or if you can figure out a way to adjust the odometer so it matches yours without the silver lines appearing between digits indicating its been tampered with.
