keys locked in car?

heres a crazy solution i saw done today. My buddy locked his keys in his truck and he has remote locks. He called his house (where his extra set of keys were) and his mom held the remote up the the phone and pushed the button while he held his phone next to the sensor under his hood. It actually unlocked his doors. I had never even heard of that.

So if you have an extra remote and lock your keys in your car, give it a try.

Re: keys locked in car?

the key fob does transmit a frequencey that theoreticly should be able to send through a phone.

Though I wouldnt count on it

Re: keys locked in car?

Im tellin you I witnessed it with my own eyes. It was a Dodge Ram so i suppose it depends on vehicle make/model but it worked. They say you can hold the phone over the door locks also but he knew where his sensor was under the hood.

no BS

Re: keys locked in car?

I do believe mythbusters did an epsiode on this, and it failed miserably. For it to work conditions would have to be perfect, battery in the remote fully charged, no background noise at all, and the phone placed by the antenna for the keyless system. Most of those are in the trunk, and if you can get in the trunk you can get into most cars through the back seat. I personally call on this one.

Re: keys locked in car?

And no, it doesn't work. Tried using both home phone and cell phone to make the call.

Re: keys locked in car?

What vehicle was you trying this with skiibum?

I have a 98 Dakota and its key fob works from a very long distance from the vehicle.
THe other day I was in walmart, about 300-400 ft from my truck and inside the store. Accidently hit the panic button and when I went out to my truck the horn was honking and honking

I would think it is possible to work through a digital phone system, since it would replicate the frequency more accuratly.
I think Mythbusters did try this with another brand of vehicle ......

Re: keys locked in car?

I tried it with both the 95 grand am and the 06 xterra. Remote for the xterra works around 500 feet or so, grand am used to but the remote is dying slowly. I do think the problem with doing this over the phone is that the speaker in a phone isn't capable of the frequency used by the transmitter.

Re: keys locked in car?

If people can steal your garage door opener frequency then they should be able to capture a key fob.

The problem with a phone is it isnt loud enough or something gets scrabled witha phone.

I sure the hell wouldnt count on it though
I always make sure they are in-hand , and I lock it as I walk away.
I guess one could accidently hit the lock button and get them locked in....

The smart a**es need to make it so it knows if the keys are in side when the car is being locked and if someone is seting in the seat or not.
On star my A** !
