Cataletic Converter, 3000 RPM
ok, at one time I had a code that was pointing towards the right bank catalitic converter, I reset the computer and it has not returned, hower in park it will not rev over 3000 RPM and has a roar noise coming from the air box, seems WAY under powered when driving it. Any suggestions. Also do you think the cat converter can be cut off? If so do I have to replace it. Thanks again for coming to my rescue.

Re: Cataletic Converter, 3000 RPM
There is a rev limiter to prevent the engine from overspeed when in park or neutral. This rev limiter is set for 3000 or 3500 rpm (I don't recall which) so that is probably the reason for not being able to rev the engine in park. The catalytic converter is not contributing to that.
As for the lack of power, do you know what the exact code number was that you were seeing? There are numerous codes that point to the catalytic converters, it woudl help to know which one you were experiencing. The converters are an emissions device, and it is illegal to remove them without replacing them with appropriate replacements. Plugged converters could cause your lack of power, but the if the converters have failed, it would be in your best interest to repair the issue that caused them to fail. You probably have a rich air fuel ratio that is causing the converters to overheat, if in fact the converter(s) is the problem. -Rod |

Hi Rod, thanks for the response... 2003 Lincoln LS, I went and had the codes pulled, the first one is a P0353, it says the PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the primary or secondary electrical circuits for ignition coil "C".
The second code is a P0420, and it says the PCM has determined that the catalyst system efficiency for bank 1 is below threshold for the current engine operating conditions. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank) wheeew.. that is alot of stuff, now can you or someone please tell me what direction to go from here... thanks again! The beginning of this problem was when I had the car detailed the washed the engine and I had to have 4 coil packs replaced and all was ok until a month later and it started acting funny but after running codes, it didnt point to the ciol pack, it was the catalitic converter on the right bank. So that might shed a little light on the issue |

Re: Cataletic Converter, 3000 RPM
Well, an ignition system concern could contribute to the catalyst efficient code, so I'd start by fixing the P0353 code. The purpose is twofold, an ignition system problem can destroy a catalytic converter, so even if you were to replace the catalytic converter, it may fail again soon if you don't repair the reason for the damage. Plus, the P0353 may be a "ghost" code that will go away once the ignition system issue is repaired.
I'll need to take a look over the service manual to review the diagnostic procedure for a P0353 code. If you want to send me a private message with an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments, I'll send a copy of the diagnostic procedure your way. -Rod |
