Intermittent Stalling - Fuel Pump?

89 Burb with 180k miles. The burb stalls out between 30 seconds and a few minutes whether it is just idling or driving down the road. First thought is the fuel pump but after the engine stalls I can hear the fuel pump making a buzzing sound for a few seconds then it stops. I have checked the feul pump relay and the injectors and they are working. The fuel pump was replaced about 4 years ago or about 20k miles. Could it be distributor problems? Fuel filter was replaced about 5 months ago.

Do you have spark when it dies? Can you see the injectors spray when it won't start?

I took the air filter housing off and watched the injectors. They keep spraying right up until the engine dies. Then it starts right up again without hesitation. So I don't know if I lose spark or not when it dies. Therefore the head banging.

The magnet on the dist shaft turns with the dist shaft moving, creating AC current in the pickup coil. The ignition module converts the AC signal to a DC signal. This DC signal is used by the ECM to fire the injectors.

So if the pickup coil or ignition module is having intermitten issues, it can cause the injectors not to fire.

EDIT: Of course, fuel pressure dropping can also cause the injectors not to fire. Might be a good idea to watch the fuel pressure before going after ignition module and/or pickup coil.

You got it. Since I didn't want to buy a inline pressure gauge, I took it to a shop to diagnos it. Fuel it fine but it is loosing spark at the ignition module. I have replaced one of those before. Thanks 00buck
