idle/ timing problem

i have looked through most of the threads here to find most problems with idling have been either erratic idling or low idle. my problem is that it idles to high, around 1100 to 1200 rpm. oh yeah, SOHC motor. it idles pretty smooth but just want come down to where i need it to in order to get a good timing reading. also, with it idling at the rpm that it does the most i can get out of the timing is 12 degrees, checked the timing chain last night and appears to be correct, looked at the oil pump shaft through the distributor hole and the half moon appears to be facing the front of the car but maybe facing up a little, how exact should this half moon be? any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Re: idle/ timing problem

if your car runs well, the distributor/oil pump shaft is lined up right. there arent enough teeth so that you can be off a tooth and still have a fine runing car. id say adjust your throttle cable, then adjust your idle speed. theres a special method to adjust the idle speed via the screw. you cant just turn the screw because the ecu will compensate if it thinks your messing something up. i forgot the method but it should be available with a net search.

Re: idle/ timing problem

Thanks for your help! I will try to search for the proper procedure for adjusting the idle speed now, anyone out there that can direct me to this procedure for the SOHC engines?
