97 Buick LeSabre Won't Start

I need help ... My car would not start yesterday, and I realized the fuel pump was not running. So I bought a new fuel pump today and put it on, the car still won't start, the fuel pump still does not run and I have been told to check the relay. I cannot find the relay for this car. any suggestions?

Re: 97 Buick LeSabre Won't Start

I have a '94 with the same symptoms. To date I have replaced the fuel pump, oil pressure sensor, crank position sensor and fuel pump relay. I have put power straight to the fuel pump test plug by the battery. I have by-passed all curcuits & ran my own power wire back past the wire harness to the pump. Still!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sigh! taxi cabs for me. My car will not stay broke long enough for a tow truck let alone to diagnose. When the pump can be heard it will start. Except for the wiring this has all been done by legit auto mechanics.

Re: 97 Buick LeSabre Won't Start

I have a 97. There are some relays under the hood along the firewall. Might check there. The plastic covering has to be removed to get to them. Right off hand, I do not know which one, specifically, is for the fuel pump. They may be marked on the plastic or inside. The manual might say something about them. I know the Haynes Manual does get specific about the relays.

Also, there are 2 sets of fuses. There is the regular fuse box under the dash, left side. This fuse box has an access door. There are more fuses on the right side, under the dash. These are larger fuses. The plastic under the glove box must be dropped down to access the fuses on the right side. I think there is a fuse for the fuel pump on the right side (larger fuse)--but, then again, I haven't looked at it for a long time. Someone else may know more.

Check all the wiring connectors running to the pump for corrosion, especially at the right rear wheel area by the fuel tank, this is a known problem area.

Re: 97 Buick LeSabre Won't Start

Troll - Fuel pump relay & fuse(#6?) are under the dash on passenger side. I think the 97 also has the lead by the battery that will send power to the fuel pump.

Troll & ptheoc - Check the ground bus on the driver's side. The fuel pump grounds at this connector. Very common problem. Here's a pic showing the general location of the ground bus. The ground bus will have black wires instead of white. Pull the metal bar from the bus & remove any corrosion from both the male & female terminals. Apply some dielectric grease & reassemble.

Re: 97 Buick LeSabre Won't Start

Hiya Mickey#1. Thanks for the great location photo. I went to the fuel pump mfr's site and stumbled accross this. This bulliten could solve 15% of the LeSabre posts here and elsewhere. GM%2520Fuel%2520Pump%2520Wiring%2520Harnesses.pdf
Keep in mind I wired all the way past all curcuits & went straight from the battery to the fuel pump, ground too. still had same prob. The GM TECHNICAL SERVICE says

"The Problem:
Many GM vehicles from 1988 to 2005 have electrical connectors on
the fuel pump module that may become loose over time due to vibration, leading to faulty, high-resistance connections. The symptoms - burned
or melted connectors and pins - lead to a voltage drop situation where
low or no voltage can cause the module to stop pumping.

The Solution:
GM Fuel Pump Module Wiring Harness Repair Kits from Airtex. Airtex Products’ latest fuel system solution provides a quick and reliable fix
for burned or melted wiring harness connections on certain GM in-tank
fuel pump applications. Airtex offers wire harness kits with the proper mating connector and wire gauge (PNs WH3000, WH3001, WH3002
and WH3003) to address GM fuel pump module connector problems.
Always inspect the wiring harness and connector for damage when replacing a GM fuel pump module, and replace with a new harness,
if necessary, to avoid costly comebacks and potentially hazardous
conditions. Contact your local Airtex distributor for more information
and to order the replacement harness for your application.

Start a new thread, better chance for responses. Yes that harness was a common issue.
