door insert question

I'm in the process right now of fabricating some color on my doors. Does anyone know the process of fabricating the upper fabric (carpet like material) on the door panels? It seems like it's all just one peice is it held on with an adhesive or something?

Re: door insert question

If its just the base then yes it is held in with adhesive.

Re: door insert question

If by base you mean the bottom peice that covers the screws that hold the panel to the door then no, I'm talking about the one next to the door handle.

Re: door insert question

LOL, No I meant base 3k. The carpet panels up top that came on base Stealths and base 3ks are glued on. The leather ones that came on SL's, RT's, TT's, and VR4's in clipped on.

Re: door insert question

Well looks like I got the cheap end of the deal lol. I DO have an SL, but it's the carpet and not leather. Is there any way to remove them with heat or something, or do it with the peice still attached or am I kinda screwed and have to buy a VR4 panel?

I have the panel off my door it's actually sitting right next to me lol. It is indeed all one peice.

Re: door insert question

The carpet near the bottom is screwed on I thought, you could do it the easy way, but you risk damage.

Re: door insert question

No not the bottom peice the top peice. But anyway, if you do happen to be lucky and wanna do leather inserts on a clipped on version of the panel, here's a link I found on how to do it.

As for my SL, I'm not too sure where to go from here. I'm gonna do the bottom for sure, but it won't match the top if I don't do that so I have to find a way.

Re: door insert question

Yeah the top really would complete everything. I would personally probboly just cut it out, I dont see any other way to do it, if theres no way to really loosen the adhesive and no bolts then thats the only thing left. good luck I know i will be doing this within the next week or so, im going white and black.

Re: door insert question

Well being as impatient as I am, I got it off. All it is on the SL is the fabric material adhered to a lining of vinyl material underneath it and it's all glued to the actual door panel. Honestly I think this should be easy enough. I'll prolly reuse the original vinyl underfabric to adhere my new fabric to it, the adhere that to the door panel and use a flathead to tuck it nicely in place around the edges. I just used a flathead to pull a corner of it up and it peeled off pretty easy.

Re: door insert question

Well as far as the door inserts go, top and bottom, I'm doing those myself. No kit. The only think I'm undecided on is what to use. I've never been a huge fan of leather, even though leather inserts might not be a bad idea, but I'm not sure yet. I don't know what material to use, but it's prolly gonna be along the lines of the original material, just dark red. I also might dye my door handles dark red as well (if anyone knows of some good vinyl dye, let me know. I don't want it fading off if I decide to do it.) If anyone has any other cool ideas as far as material is concerned, feel free...

Re: door insert question

Here's my first attempt on the driver side door panel using red vinyl fabric:

I think it turned out pretty nice. This is the first time I've ever attempted something like this. I'll have it installed tomorrow after a little "tack" cleanup.

If anyone wants a write up with pictures when I do the passenger side, let me know and I will. All the materials cost a total of about $15 for a quarter yard of vinyl (enough to do both doors and then some.) and some very strong adhesive.

Re: door insert question

Looks very good for a first try especially. I wouldnt mind looking into that myself, but I'm eventually getting new two-tone leather for my seats and I beleive it will come with new leather for the inserts.

Re: door insert question

Looks real good. I may attempt something similar in both the Talon and the Stealth
