Fuel Injectors

Hi there

I was just wondering if anyone with a 1999 or newer 3.8liter windstar has taken out and cleaned their fuel injectors. I have seen wiswinds pics for his 96 windstar but was wondering if anyone has taken them out of a 1999+ windstar. Does anyone that did take them out know where to get a new pintle cap and that filter that goes in at the top of the injector. And what is the best way to clean them? Or is there anything else that needs replacing other than the orings, pintle cap, and filter?

Thank you

Re: Fuel Injectors

The newer injectors ('99+) are not as easy (impossible?) to disassemble as the earlier models.

Use spray cleaner to clean the inlet and outlet as much as you can. You will remove a lot of gunk doing this. Do not immerse the body of the injector in any cleaning solution.

It's a bit complicated, but to clean the insides you can use a rig that applies pressurized cleaner-rich fuel to the injector while you apply short bursts of 12volts to the electric terminals. This set-up blasts cleaner through the injector insides ... cleaning it up pretty well ... until you get a good spray pattern. I've made such a rig ... but its a pretty unsafe affair to use ... so I'll not describe it any further. OR, you can accomplish much of the same inside cleaning action by just dumping cleaner into a low tank of fuel.
