okokok,,, have pics need help

Started taking stuff off motor to make pulling it easier...

Neophyte engine rebuilding questions:

Header gaskets - side showing is manifold side... soot is from exhaust leak?

Intake to Heads gasket / metal plate / shim thing... Burnt! Anyone know why?

Oval ports or Rectangle ports?

Intake manifold as date stamp on it of '68, block is a '74... Intake manifold has a couple broken bolt holes (ears? tabs?) on two corners... probably just get new one.

I guess it was a good thing I did this now... there was so much sludge and crap all over... Had I known it was that sloppy, I'd have pulled it and rebuilt it as soon as I got it.

More updates as I do more stuff.

One last question... Head bolts (in between the rockers, etc) are on tight! Myabe thread locker, maybe torqued the snot ouf of them. Ok to use impact wrench to get them off? Or is that to easy to break them off? Also, should I take the rockers off first? Some of the bolts are almost impossible to get to...
(Not the best picture...)

Re: okokok,,, have pics need help

1st pic: Soot on the header gaskets that makes its way from the inside of the opening to the outside is indeed an exhaust leak.

2nd pic: The metal plate is an EGR restrictor. It will get burned/rusted since hot exhaust gasses pass through it.

3rd pic: Rectangular ports.

Ears broken off the intake manifold...replace manifold.

Loosen/remove all rocker arms before attempting to remove the heads.

If the head bolts aren't "torque to yield" type, then using an impact on them won't hurt a thing. If they are...I'd seriously try to avoid using an impact.

Re: okokok,,, have pics need help

Do I need to replace the EGR restrictor - does that come with new head gaskets? And how do I tell what kind of head bolts they are??.. They look like plain old grade 8 bolts to me.

The EGR restrictor will come with the new Felpro intake manifold gaskets. If the head bolts are aftermarket, then they are not torque to yield. The torque to yield bolts were intsalled from the factory on some engines around the early to mid 80's and on some other engines they are still in use. If the heads have the grade 8 markings on them they are not torque to yield.

Re: okokok,,, have pics need help

THANKS! Got all the bolts off, but didn't see the four beneath the headers until later... (swell).

I guess I'll HAVE to pull the engine to get the rest of the bolts (and the heads) off. (Grrrrrrr... I really wanted to see what the problem is with #3)
