Talking 97 Villager has starting problems.

I have had good service from this vehicle but it has been giving problems over the last month. The problem is this.. The engine turns over fine and will on occasion start and run for 5 seconds then go dead. When this occurs the lights on the instrument panel that normally come on when the key is in the on position do not light up (check engine, battery/ charge, oil and the like). I have disconnected negative terminal to allow control module to reset, and am about to try to reset rear collision sensor switch I just read about; any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm glad I found this site.
