I have a 1995 Cherokee 4wd w/ 6 cyl and it will not turn over.
I removed the starter and the Positive/Negitive cables and had them checked at Autozone and they where fine and the battery is fine. I turn the ingintion on and everything comes on but the starter, it dosent make a sound. Any suggestions as to what I should check next. Thanks Kevin |

Re: Cherokee wont start
Get a buddy to help you with this one. Have your freind sit in the drivers seat and hold the ignition switch to the start position. Now with a test light, check and see if you have power going to the starter on the small wire connected to the solenoid . You should have power, if not then your problem lies with either your ignition switch or circiut. Also is it a manuel or auto tranny, if auto, check that your getting power to and through the NSS, if man. makesure your clutch switch is closing when you press the clutch to the floor.

Re: Cherokee wont start
If its an automatic... wiggle your gear shifter around in the park position while turning the key... Sounds like your neutral safety switch...

Re: Cherokee wont start
I checked the NSS Switch and only had continuity while in netutral, all other positions where dead.
Now all I have to do is find a place on the internet to get a good price on a switch. Thanks for all your help. |

Re: Cherokee wont start
I heard the nss is kinda expensive.... and you can clean the one you have... if you search around on this site there are some posts that give step by step instructions with pictures... Everyone seems to say its in a tight spot but the shade tree mechanic can do it... good luck... let us know how you make out

Re: Cherokee wont start
You should only have continuity at your NSS in Park and Neutral, all others should be "dead". If you place the shifter in nuetral and it starts, than you have your problem found. If not you might be looking at your ignition switch.

Am I doing something wrong, do I need to disconnect the shift linkage?? I did orignaly try to start it in neutral and nothing happened, am I looking in the wrong area, should I be replacing the ingition switch.?? I apreciate all the help. Thanks.

Re: Cherokee wont start
As far as getting the NSS off, here's a quote from- http://jeepin.com/features/nss/index.asp
"Next you'll need to pull the NSS off the tranny. It's rather stubborn, and you can't 'twist' it off -- it's got to come straight off. Using a great tip I got from the JeepsUnlimited Cherokee forum, I threaded the retainer nut back on a couple of turns, then used a flat head screw driver to carefully pry the NSS off, using the lip of the tranny pan for leverage. This worked like a champ and didn't damage the unit." They've got some pics there too. Another cause of your no-start could be the CPS (crankshaft posistion sensor) Check here, scroll down... http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/...iagnostics.htm In my '89, I was able to resolve, (so far, *crosses fingers), a no start from the CPS by unplugging the wiring harness in the engine bay (drivers side, 6th cylinder area) and cleaning the contacts. I plugged it back in and viola, she started right up... ~Good Luck! |
