Waterpump replacement for 88 Mazda 323

Does anyone have a good "How To" for replacing a waterpump on a 1988 Mazda 323 (it's actually a Mercury Tracer)???

This may help if you have a SOHC engine.

Having a Haynes book on hand would be money well spent if you plan to do the work yourself. You will need to carefully inspect the timing belt and replace it while it's off if it's worn. The answer above doesn't tell you how to Set up the engine prior to disassembly so you get the valve timing correct on assembly. I know there is a procedure for getting the cam/cams aligned with the crankshaft, the Haynes will give you that information. If you don't get it right you can damage the engine or it will not run. It probably will require the engine be placed to TDC for timing reference and insure the timing marks are aligned, I don't have the specific information for your engine.

Replace your timing belt and idler pulley while you're at it. Make sure you don't put the cam sensor gear on backwards. Look for the painted dot. You'll see what I mean. Make sure that you have something to raise your engine with or to support it, you have to remove the mount when you remove the timing belt.
