88 Tracer belt keeps breaking

The alternator/waterpump belt has broken twice within 3 weeks on a 1988 Mercury Tracer... Any ideas or thoughts??

Inspect all the pulleys for nicks, check to see that the alternator and waterpump pulleys turn easily, make sure all the pulleys are aligned.

The alternator pulley definately turns easily... The waterpump pulley turns easily also, but I think I feel a little resistance when turning it... I'll check for nicks and alignment tomorrow in the daylight...

Another thing, after the belt broke the car started and made it back to our house (about 1 mile)... Now it cranks, but does not start... (This old car is just our back and forth to the train station car, but I'd like to get it running again)...
