Battery Questions
RE: 1997 740il
1. I'm looking for info./experience on what the typical life is of the original battery installed in the vehicle. I believe my car still has the original. 2. Are batteries suitable for this car readily available or is it necessary to buy a new one from the dealer? Any specific criteria to be aware of - I read somewhere that sealed batteries aren't right for this car - don't know if this is accurate or only applies to earlier BMWs'. The Owners Manual isn't specific even on size. Any information would be appreciated. |

batteries
I have a 1988 750 and it had a Interstate sealed battery, lasted 6 years. Auto Zone sells a great drop in replacement battery (not sealed) with vent tube just like the factory one and it sells for about $59.00 with a seven year warranty.

These days in Australia it seems considered good value ???? if you get any more than about three years from a battery.
What ever you decide to get, it is good practice to get the largest capacity, (cranking current) battery which will fit in the carrier. This is to allow for, not only starting in all weather extremes, but also the pre-requisites of todays motoring. ie better driving lamps, stereo's with huge amplifiers, etc, etc. Just make sure that your alternator is up to the job as well. To give you an idea, my 733 has an 85amp alternator and 450cca battery. 5 years now and no problems. Cheers and good luck. Mike |
