Exclamation Firefox Plugin Not Working - What Codec???

Can someone help me...PLEASE!

I haven't been able to get any plugins to work with Firefox 2.0.0.2(the newest one). I just downloaded VLC Media Player thinking that may be the solution. Well it isnt'.

The box the video should play in is blank with a puzzle piece that says "Click To Download Plugin". Then it says unknown plugin (application/x-mplayer2).

HELP! This has been driving me insane for at least a month.

Re: Firefox Plugin Not Working - What Codec???

Tex, try this, I found it on another forum. Here's the link: http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia...ssing-how.html

I just got a new puter and had the same issue with a supposed missing plugin. It's not a plugin problem at all, but a couple of missing .dll files.

You need to insert two files into your FireFox "plugins" folder. They are: npdsplay.dll and npwmsdrm.dll. You can Google them and download them if you can't find them on your computer.

Simply copy them into the FireFox plugins folder and you can play those files. It's a two minute fix and you'll be up and running.
I have no idea if that will fix your issue or not, but it's a start. I'm running the same version of Firefox you are, but I haven't had any video issues yet.

Thanks Cav. I actually searched that site (I'm a member there and visit on occasion. Guess I didn't put in the write words.

I installed it and it worked.

This guys comment has me worried slightly:

I registered on this site just to respond and warn you guys: be careful downloading this manually! It was specifically removed due to a known vulnerability that leaves your computer open to hackers.

I hate IE as much as the next person, but instead of opening up my computer to one of the more well-known attack vulnerabilities, I suggest just using IE for this. (Or at the very least know where you are getting that assembly from and making sure it is not an older version with the problems...but even then, you better be aware if an update comes out if another way to hack into this is found and exploited.)

More info:

(this is the best site, also includes instructions on how to bypass and updated Vista and XP instructions)

Good luck; I hope this helps,

He may just be make the assessment just to warn people at the possibility. No one else commented on it, so....

Thanks again.

Re: Firefox Plugin Not Working - What Codec???

For what it's worth, I've used Opera 9.0, set to mask as IE, for some sites that really need IE to work.

I guess I'm just stubborn enough to NOT use IE, even if it makes extra work for me.

You're not alone, once I switched to Firefox I never looked back. The only time I ever us IE is at work.

I tried Opera before I used Firefox, just could never get use to it for some reason.

Re: Firefox Plugin Not Working - What Codec???

Tex, get Opera 9.01. It works much the same way as Firefox, tabbed browsing and all. It also lets you set site preferences to identify itself as IE for sites that won't work without IE.

Import bookmarks, the whole nine yards.

Re: Firefox Plugin Not Working - What Codec???

Are you trying to play a file located on your computer, or are you trying to stream it from a server?

If your streaming it, download it somewhere first.

Use this application: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ called gspot to work out which CODEC the file uses, then install the CODEC binaries, restart Firefox and see if it works.

If not, post back here and we'll troubleshoot.
