Re: 99 explorer shuts down when coming to a stop
Initial suspects that come to my mind would be a torque converter that is not disengaging or an Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid that isn't working properly. Does it only seem to stall if you've been traveling over 35mph prior to the stop, or do it more when the A/C or defroster is on? When stopped idling, if you turn the A/C on does the engine speed drop significantly?

I have experienced this same problem, with my 1998 Explorer 4.0L SOHC and i have no clue on how to go about fixing this because when i take it to the mechanic i can't make the car turn off on cue, i have noticed that it usually happens when i am coming down this one specific hill near where i live, usually i would be pressing the brakes and the car will just stall, i will then have to move the gear to "N" and the turn it on and move it back to "D". If anyone would be able to help me i would appreciate it thanks.

Re: 99 explorer shuts down when coming to a stop
Welcome to the forum!
Have you had the dealer check any of the above suggestions? In addition to the above, add "vacuum leaks" to the list. -Rod |

Re: 99 explorer shuts down when coming to a stop
well i was trying not to involve the dealer, that's why i was asking if anyone had any thoughts on this matter. I figured it would be best to find out from somoeone here if they already knew what the problem is because it's kind of a hrd problem to explain to my mechanic and it's also not a problem i can show him because i can't make it happen on que. thanks

Re: 99 explorer shuts down when coming to a stop
Well, others have experienced this before, and typically it is one of the suggestions mentioned above, EGR, IAC, torque converter. You can also consider a vacuum leak, carbon build up on the throttle plate, and faulty brake light switch. Any of these can cause the symptoms you describe, but without ruling some of these out, it's difficult to tell you what is causing your particular stalling issue.
One thing you might try is, with the car sitting at idle, turn on the air conditioning and see if the engine speed drops. If it does drop noticeably, then your IAC is probably on it's way out. If the idle speed seems to stay where it should, then you will need to physically inspect some of the other items such as EGR, vacuum leaks and carbon build up. Checking the torque converter will require a professional grade scan tool. This same scan tool can monitor the brake on-off switch. -Rod |

Re: 99 explorer shuts down when coming to a stop
wow, you summed that up real nice, thanks for the tips, i will talk with my mechanic and have him look at those things. As for other things i was wondering since you seem to be such a knowledgable person on this topic, i have been having some other issues, if you had some time maybe you could help me figure out some other things that i have been struggling with.

Re: 99 explorer shuts down when coming to a stop
There are many knowledgeable folks on this forum, and many of the familiar issues have been addressed. The place to start is with the search function. Since you found this thread, I suspect you already know how to use the search function, and thank you for trying that first!
However, if you don't find a thread addressing issues you are experiencing, feel free to post a new thread on the forum, sharing as much as you possibly can about the concern, what you've already checked for, and if there are any consistencies to the issue (engine temp, humidity, ambient temp, etc.) -Rod |
