Stereo wireup

I just got a new Sony Explod CD player today and installed it myself. it works fine but i discovered that when i shut off the ignition, the stereo will reset when i turn it back on, so its not getting the continuous power flow when the key is shut. there are 2 wires comming out of my dash, positive and negative of course and three comming out of the wiring harness for the stereo. there is a black wire, red and yellow, the instruction manual says that the yellow is for the memory of the stereo and thats what gets ran to a continuous live wire. what i think is going on though is that being my car is an 83, it was never designed for a digital radio, the original only had the big dials to tune and whatnot so im sure it diddnt need continuous memory power. should i run the yellow wire to a continuous 12 volt source then (cig lighter perhaps?) or i not? i dont want to blow anything if i run too much into the new stereo. my new stereo has its own 10 amp fuse by the way.

Re: Stereo wireup

There is a terminal on the fuseblock marked "BAT". Hook your yellow wire to this terminal - it supplies 12v as long as the battery is hooked up and charged.

Re: Stereo wireup

Is it going to be ok to put the yellow wire directly to a 12v source?? or should i splice a 10 amp fuse between it also?

Re: Stereo wireup

if you have a clock, it will be on all the time.
you could run it to that harness

i'd say put a fuse on it.

Re: Stereo wireup

Speaking of that clock, mine was massivly inacurate, so I removed it, because I too installed an MP3 CD Player, and it had a clock built right in. In the place of the analog clock though I custom fitted a small tachometer in the place of it. Take a look:

Re: Stereo wireup

thats pretty cool. i just cut out some sheet metal and sprayed it black to cover the hole, looks like there was never anything there now.

Re: Stereo wireup

Thanks guys... aside from the engine and the trunk, I try to keep any modifications I do to appear stock.

Re: Stereo wireup

I ordered it from JC Whitney. As far as stock goes... on the inside and out my car is far from stock, but for the most part it appears stock. For instance, where the ECM used to go, I replaced the kick panel with one from a 1979 Caprice so it looks as if the computer was never there. I also installed power windows, lock and an electronic trunk release all off of a donor Caprice wagon (except the trunk release)... looks as if the car always had it all. The thing I'm trying to get rid of is the face around the stereo and climate contols. Like an idiot, when I was younger I painted it black and put a red bowtie in the center of it. It looks okay, but I want the stock appearance and I can't find another one with the same woodgrain to save my life.
