smoke

ok so today i finally got a a dmm so i went online and got a test tone and i put in the test tone and tempted to do my gains with 44 volts that i am looking for. so i got the out put to reach 44 voltsso then i let it play a little to see if my amp would go in to protection mode or if it would get hott. sso after 5 mins i notice some smoke coming out off the corner of my trunk. ( i have the rear seats down.) and my sub is in the middle. now when i noticed the smoke i went a turned off the car and let it sit. then i turned it up slowly to see if there were any problems and it played fine up until arond 60 out of 62 then the sub would sound like crap ( i backed it off). now is that normal or did i burn somthing up

also when i noticed the smoke and i turned off the car the sub was only warm.

Re: smoke

sounds like you at least started to melt the coil. thats not good. 60 is very high volume, probably would have been clipping the head unit.

Re: smoke

didn't you ..... electronic devices are made by putting a certain amount of magic smoke in them, when you let out all the smoke it doesn't work anymore.

Oh that was wrong.

Playstation best way to tell is if the sub is emitting a burnt smell, believe me its a bad smell, and your car will retain it for weeks. The other way is to push on the dust cap/center of the subs cone and if you hear a scratching sound then thats the voice coil unwound from the heat melting the glue. What gen type-r are they the ones with the single bump sorround, or the dual bump. Sounds like your going for around 500 or 1000 watts. If its the single bump they dont handle as much power as the newer version.

Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota.

Re: smoke

no smell just some slight smoke coming out of the trunk. i did get the new electronics smell sometimes tough.
where is the dump at. and the sit ei got them off of said 500 rms and my manuel says 500 rms.

i found the reason why it melted, it looks like the box that said it has a internal volume of .8 f^3 was really 1.25 f^3 just one more reason why i need to make my own boxes

Re: smoke

Smoke is almost NEVER a good thing with anything electrical. Best thing to do if you ever have smoke is turn everything off immediately and figure out why you're smoking! If you want smoke/fire, twist your remote wire into your main power for the amp and turn the remote switch on (if you've got your amp(s) on a toggle that is), it's really quite amusing to watch another person do this, wish I had a video.
