1998 blazer front diff seals

Does anyone know how to replace the axel seals for the front diff? I have a leak on the drivers side. All of the seals probably need to be replaced, but if there is an easy fix for just the one I would prefer to do that. I guess depending on how big of a pain it is. Anyway if anybody has any input I would appreciate it.

The axle shaft must be removed to replace the axle shaft seal. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle, remove the outer tie rod end from the knuckle, remove the caliper, caliper bracket and rotor, remove the axle nut. Separate the axle from the bearing/hub assembly and remove the half shaft assembly from the differential. Remove the old seal, and install the new one. The seal uses an interferance fit into the differential housing.

So if I understand correctly, the diff does not have to be removed. and this seal is an outer seal. Is there any particular way to remove the old seal? Thank you so much for your help.

The differential does not need to be removed, just about everything else does though The seal pry’s out, usually quite easily. There is a tool called a seal remover, and it vaguely resembles the claw end of a claw hammer. Most auto parts stores carry them. Careful use of a large screwdriver, small pry bar, hammer handle, or even the end of the axle shaft as you remove the axle will work. Helps if you have the new seal to look at so you know what you're dealing with when removing the old seal. What ever tool you use, be very careful not to damage the differential housing where the seal fits into it. Installing the new seal is done with a seal installer tool, also available at the auto parts store. Gently using a hammer and block of wood works, or a leather mallet works well too. Make sure the seal goes in straight and is flush with the end of the differential housing. If not, it will not seal correctly. Again, be careful not to damage the differential housing. Lubricate the sealing surfaces of the seal and axle shaft, with Vaseline or oil before installing the axle.
