Cuts out while driving. 88 Brougham
1988 Oldmsobile 98 Brougham with a 3.8 engine and 180,000 miles. Engine cuts out while driving. After some time it will start. Rad is very bad and I've been told the car may have a hot water sensor which can cause the engine to stop running as a protection device. Does this model have such a sensor or sensors and does anyone know where they are located. Thanks...Jack

Re: Cuts out while driving. 88 Brougham
Not true here, see if you have spark and fuel pressure when this happens.

Re: Cuts out while driving. 88 Brougham
There are sensors that monitor the engine temperature but I doubt any would cause the engine to stop. That would leave GM open to huge liability suits if an accident were to occur.
Top 3 causes of intermitant stalling are ICM, fuel pump & crank sensor. Next time it stalls you need to be prepared to check for spark & or fuel pressure. |
