Kawaskaki ZX-RR ´03

Back on track with a new kit. Isn't that the best part of this hobby, to crack a new box and look through the parts?

This time I'll try something new. I've been collecting Studio 27 transkits for a while but never faced the fear of starting one. Resin and white metal (why do they use this??) are two things, the steep price another factor as I wouldn't like to go wrong with such expensive stuff.

The Kawasaki ZX-RR transkit uses a Yamaha M1 as base but I would say there are quite a few parts needed. You'll need tires and rimbs along with brake discs and front forks and that's nearly all. I have the forks from another build but I think I'll just order the B tree from the M1 along with the tire bag instead of wasting a whole kit.

I'll go gently on this one as it is my first resin kit and fírst attempt on white metal parts. On the other side there is a lot of large parts making it a pretty easy trip as long as you get the cowls straighten out (you´ll see what I mean).

One of the nice attributes when buying S27 kits is as you all probably know, THE BOX.

Let's have a look inside it, shall we?

Here are the white metal parts (just some of them actually)

Resin parts layed out.

Seat and tank dummy is molded in one piece. As it will all be green this will ease the painting. I've ordered some Ninja Green from Hiroboy to use on this kit.

Here is the bottom side of the same part.

Engine leaves a lot to wich for. There are a lot of moulded in details that will be hard to pick out and give some life. I'll need to figure out if some parts will be replaced or if I shall just close my eyes and remember that all will be hidden undernieth the cowls...?

As you can see the front section of the exhaust system is...well, crappy...to say the least.

Here's a closer look at the side and top cowl part. Looks pretty well detailed and molded.

Unfortunately, when you put the two halves together what you get is this...

A very poor fit... I'll decide if cutting the insert pins will lessen the problem or if I have to pick out the old epoxy putty and starting filling away.

Anyhow, in general it's a fairly decent mold with just a little flash and some mold edges to take care of. No air bubbles what so ever from what I have spotted so far and the resin is very hard.

Kit comes with a PE sheet and decal sheet that both looks rather promising.

Will start gluing the cowl halves together and decide from there if the box goes back on the shelf or if it attracts me to finish it.

best regards
Joel

Re: Kawaskaki ZX-RR ´03

Looks like you have your work cut out for you there... looking forward to seeing more. I've always heard nice things about S27 kits, but the front of the exhaust system is really a turn off. With your skills, I'm sure you can get it to look much nicer.

Re: Kawaskaki ZX-RR ´03

Hi Joel,

I like this Kawa. On the former 2002 version the area behind the seat looked rather square, but here the rear end looks more smooth.

Just like you I am disappointed to see the fit of the parts. I feel just like you: holding the parts together and see this gap etc. makes you put the parts in the box and set it back on the shelf.

Nevertheless, I´d like to see it when finished ;-))

When you decide to build it: good luck

Re: Kawaskaki ZX-RR ´03

Thanks for your support and interest. I've definately decided to finish it as the bike itself is a stunner and I need some green on my shelf... I also must add that the fit wasn't that bad at all when it came to glueing the two halves together. I had to cut the rearmost insert pin and glue the top cowl parts first. When that was sorted out it was no problem to flex the side cowls so that I could glue the lower cowl together. Will putty it up and show you the result.

Re: Kawaskaki ZX-RR ´03

hi joel,

i've always wanted to build a zx-rr but i wanted the '04 version so that i can have shinya nakano's version but seems that atsubishi is the only one that has it & unfortunately, they don't ship outside japan.

well, good luck on your project.

i'm not sure what i would be making after completing yoshimura hayabusa probably tomorrow or the day after as the weather today is not good for spray work as it rained this morning & it's humid after the rain.

i may build camel m1 '06 edwards' version with usgp design or repsol '06 dani's version or even fortuna m1 '04(plain). i'm not sure what to make. maybe you can decide for me. he he.

Why not one of the 06 bikes? You'd be one of the first to show them here!
