'88 Jetta Slalom

I have a chance to pick up a Canadian version '88 Jetta Slalom for 500 bucks certified. Body is quite good, tires new.. interior decent but dirty. Manual Tranny. It has been sitting for 7 months and had a foot of snow on it when I went to look at it last week. We brushed off the snow, hooked a portable charger to it and it started first try. I was amazed.
Anyway.. the owner of the car says that the engine in this car, being a Slalom model, (brought out for the Olympic Games in '88) was equipped with a different type head. No where do I see any mention of this while researching the car.
If anyone knows, is there anything different about the engine compared to the regular Jetta of this time?

Thanks

Paul

Re: '88 Jetta Slalom

From what I could find, it seems that the Slolam model was just a trim package for the '88 winter Olympics. I doubt there were any mechanical extras. Volkswagon is notorious for offering incentive trim packages like the jetta Trek or the more recent Golf with guitar and pickup jack.

Re: '88 Jetta Slalom

Hey from what I can see this is a standerd 1.8l 8v digifant 2 engine.
the digifant 2 is the fuel system. its seems that the slalom was a trim package I have posted a few other places to find out for sure.

How did you come about finding out it was a slalom? The symbols on the side are a trim package for the wolfsburg. Does it have Recaros seats?

I hate to say it but it lookks just like a regular gl!

I found this and it has 1991 on it but it works for most 85-92 golfs and jetta's.

I'll post back when I hear some new info. And if it is a slalom you now now have an uber rare piece of history.

Well, there is a badge on the rear right bumper that says SLALOM, but I don't see a ski rack (may have just been taken off) and the rims look different then what I have seen regarding what the Slalom model came with. It also has a power sunroof. I didn't see any seepage on the headliner so it looks like it is sealed ok. It does not have the Recaro seats but they don't appear to be stock with that model. If it did have them, I would be buying it for sure and sticking them in my MGB.
He is getting it out of the spot and making it roadworthy and putting on his dealer plate so I can take it for a spin.
I might just toss 400 his way and see if he will go for that. Will be a good first car for my Son.
If anyone can garner any more information, I would appreciate it.

Paul

Re: '88 Jetta Slalom

That some wierd ish! it has a gli wing on the back, it has cruise control, it has a power sun roof, this is a rare beast my friend,is all the stuff legit I mean oem or does it look aftermarket? This has half of the GLI package the few other things missing, a 16v engine, power windows, the trim outside, and a few other things.

Canadians get all the cool stuff, I'm still waiting on some help too i'll let you know!

Re: '88 Jetta Slalom

So is it worth $500 if it drives well? I am mechanically able as I am rebuilding an MGB GT and also have a '71 B I do all the work on.
It has 235,000km on the clock and I did notice a bit of oil from the exhaust when started, but it had been sitting for seven months.

Yes well worth it, these engines are fairly cheap to rebuild and have seen some go over 300,000 that were taking care of.

I am building a 9a 2.0l 16v that will be switched from cis-e over to digi-2 fuel system and will have in under 600 total on the build, my car had the same engine as yours, the 1.8l 8v digi-2.

here are a couple of other websites to help you out if you have mechanical trouble, this forum is kind of slow.

vwvortex, the golf II and Jetta II section,
vwfixx,the mk2 section.

on the vortex you usally get a response right away but be warned if you dont do your homework and search first they will give you a hard time.

on the fixx its really laid back but there a lot of good dubbers in there and its really friendly.

this site is good but it seems Doug is the only one answering the hard questions.

I have found out too that the slalom was a trim package and the engine and fuel stuff was all the same. So get it cleaned up and fixed up and post some pictures!
