96 2.4 dohc timing chain/timing question
Ok did a head gasket. head is ok per machine shop/valve job. I bought a new cloyes timing chain set, and a new tensioner. I went to put it back together, following the manual exactly. Here is the problem:
First, the timing chain was so tight, even with the tensioner down, it would not fit over the sprockets. So we had to force the intake sprocket over the cam with the chain attached to get it to work. The intake sprocket is lined up with an 8mm bolt properly, and the crankshaft sprocket is at TDC, but the exhaust sprocket will not fit the 8mm bolt-it is VERY close, but does not line up exactly. You can fit a 6mm bolt into the hole, but not an 8mm. It seems to me if you were to try to move another tooth anywhere on the sprockets it would throw it off way more. I thought about buying another timing chain as this one seems wrong. HELP!

Re: 96 2.4 dohc timing chain/timing question
fixed it-exhaust cam was about 3 teeth off actually-You have to preload the exhaust cam to the left a few teeth then set the chain, and then let it tighten itself when you let go of it with your wrench. Then you just follow the steps in the manual.
