tranny whine

1997 gt I notice a slight whining sound, only in first not really bad at all. i can only really hear it when i got the windows down and the radio off.. is this bad? i read in another forum, thats its kinda common.. just kinda worried with 140k. was thinking about putting some lucas oil treatment in it. just bought this car, dont know any history. runs drives and shifts fine. any ideas?

Re: tranny whine

I would be cautious, and definitely do some routine maintenance, havent had this happen on a grand prix, but when my brother's tranny in his Trans Am went out its started to whine about a week before it blew... if it is time for it to go, it will, no treatment in the world will stop that but it may be fine and the treatment may stop the whine, it most certainly won't hurt...

Re: tranny whine

no gringing or other noises. just a whine that goes up in pitch with the engine rpms only through first gear. not even really that noticeable, kinda reminds me of a powersteering unit thats low.. hummm better check that i guess. but it doesnt do it in park, so that shouldnt be the prob.

Re: tranny whine

if it goes away as soon as it hits 2nd I bet its the bearing on the input drum.
