Any way to get both high and low beams?
2001 LeSabre Custom, 91K miles.
I want the low beams to stay on when I switch the high beams on. I've seen the relay kits for earlier GM pickups and suvs, but is there anything out there that'll give me low beams when the high beams are on? Whoever at GM decided to stop having all headlights on when on 'high' never drove down a dirt road at night, and oughta be slapped. |

Re: Any way to get both high and low beams?
I found a schematic on the 2000' that may work.
AT YOUR OWN RISK.. . You would have to put a switch in the control circuit... You would have high beams and Low during both LOW or HIGH settings when the lights are on and switch is on if this works. The Low Beam High beam relays are controlled by the High Beam switch.. THere is a Pink/WHite and a Black/WHite wires there.. If you put a switch to short them when desired, both should light when lights are on and your dash will show high beam when your car is in LOW beam. .. (on the 2000') Those wires are control lines that go to the Light relays on the right side relay bank under the hood. Check for colors to be the same there and see if it works. They don't carry a heavy load mostly relay current. Good Luck

Re: Any way to get both high and low beams?
Thanks for the idea, I'll take a look!
Makes me wonder...if I ran a short jumper from the high-beam relay "trigger" wire to the low-beam relay "trigger wire, then I'd have both high- and low-beams whenever either was switched on. But if I added a diode so that current only flowed from the high-beam side to the low-beam side (and not the other way), then the high-beams would trigger the lows as well, but the lows wouldn't trigger the highs... Hmm...think I'll take a look at the relay box, I'll bet I could tap into the relay plug direct, and get this done with 4 inches of wire and a $2 RadioShack diode. Thanks again for the idea! Quote:

Re: Any way to get both high and low beams?
Are you certain the car will pass your state inspection if both lows and highs are on? If a car can fail from something as minor as a vapor leaking gas cap, I'd assume they'd question the headlights all being on. Guess it'd depend on where you go for the inspection

Re: Any way to get both high and low beams?
Headlights just have to work, and high's be aimed correctly for Texas inspection - safety is what they're looking for, and most cars use all 4 lamps on high anyways. Leaking gas cap is an emissions issue, piddly as it is (imho).
Thankfully, the enviro- and safety-nazi's haven't gotten a stong foothold here (yet). Quote:
