Ahh, geez man....
I just got back from a trip in Rhode Island. Lots of clam chowder (white) and fried clams. I must have insulted the clam gods I guess, my stomach feels like I have been eating just the shells. Its like....your intestines have been tied in a knot, no other side effects exept pain. No more fried shellfish, man.

Advice from a traveller
Try getting a drug called Maxolon (that's what it's called here in NZ) which is available by prescription. It's an anti-nausea drug which should settle the twisted guts feeling.
The other thing if you are rejecting fluids at either end is to try to maintain hydration levels - your pharmacist should stock an electrolyte solution which can be made up with pre-boiled or distilled water. I don't like shellfish unless I can see them in shell (to check how fresh they are) before I eat them. Chowder and heavily seasoned stuff is always a risk. Get well soon dude. |

mmmm...thanks
I really dont think it was the chowder, that stuffs yummy, with the potatoes and yummy saltyness. Could take a baguette and a bowl of that any day. Nope. The cooprate was the fried clam. Tip for everyone: HOT OIL+SHELLFISH=:apuke: mkay...I'm goin to bed I think. Night night everyone.

Maxolon (metoclopramine)
Is sold under the following Brand names : ClopraŽ, ReclomideŽ, ReglanŽ (Oral), OctamideŽ (Oral)
Watch for side effects or contra-indications and talk to your doctor. Electrolyte (even solutions like powerade or gatorade) will restore minerals and salts unlike water. Try diluting these if you can't handle them. Rest and get someone to check on you regularly - try to track your hydration intake too. Dehydration can strike unexpectedly. If you don't feel better in the next 8-12 hours see your doctor - appendicitis has similar symptoms. |

Try backpacking in the Pacific, Asia and Europe. I and lots of my friends travel extensively (eg the others have done South America, Nepal, Tibet, Laos, Cambodia, and lots of trips in Africa and India) and we all carry our medicine kits with us (even when we go tramping/skiing/backpacking).
There's nothing worse than Montezuma's revenge in a country where no one speaks english, there are no recognisable drugs and no qualified western-style doctor within two weeks walk. Or worse still when you're in a boat off the coast in a tropical cyclone and someone gashes their head open... |

Replicant's Essential Travel Kit
The following things you will need a prescription for:
- Maxolon (Treats nausea and vomiting and heartburn) - Anti histamine or similar for the treatment of allergic reactions The following things your pharmacist should have: - Cold and Flu tablets - Throat lozenges - Scissors, Tweezers and a thermometer (careful about flying with these) - Imodium for diarrhoea (possibly may need a doctor's script for this depending on country) - Aspirin or other analgesic - Antiseptic for cuts eg Betadine - Calamine for soothing sunburn, stings, bites - Gastrolyte Sachets (electrolyte for rehydration) - A small first aid kit (incl plasters, medical tape, dressings, latex gloves, cotton wool, gauze) - A clear plastic surgical dressing eg Second Skin for use over blisters or where you need to check a wound regularly - A roll of crepe bandage and a triangular bandage (for a sling) - Anti histamine cream - Sun Screen, insect repellent and a chap stick - Replicant suggests you take a couple of feminine hygiene napkins (they make very good dressings in an emergency and they have their own adhesive in some cases) - Condoms (for the obvious use but you can use it to keep water out of things too eg film for the camera in pouring rain... ) You should get vaccinations for the area you are travelling to plus (I'm not a doctor so talk to one first) I would recommend Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A & B shots for travellers + Rubella if you are a female (and a first aid course never hurt anyone either) Other essentials: - Some post it notes and a pen (and a waterproof permanent marker) - Your previous pair of prescription glasses (in case you destroy your current pair and you should carry your prescription as well in case you need to get another pair) - A roll of Duct Tape - A Glue Stick (some countries don't have glue on their stamps) - A Small Maglite or equivalent esp one you can use as a electric candle by unscrewing the lens and using it as a stand - Safety Pins - A Towel - A Space blanket (those silver things you see at camping stores) - A small plastic mirror - Spare batteries for torch/walkman - A roll of toilet paper |

No I'm not Moss - and that's why I strongly suggested seeing a doctor and a pharmacist to get professional advice. Some folk will experience unwanted side effects from even some OTC (over the counter) drugs and some folk should not use certain medications (eg pregnant folk or those being treated for other conditions or those with adverse reactions to the ingredients of some remedies).
I am not a doctor or a pharmacist and this list should NOT replace the advice of a qualified medical advisor. (This is important). If you have any doubts about any of this stuff I strongly urge you to seek medical advice from a trained professional. The list I suggested is based on my own travel kit (which I've added to from experience) and is not exhaustive. I and a few of my friends have found it useful in the past so that's why I passed it on. |

I love seafood and the clam chowder in New England is the best! Fortunately shellfish don't cause me any problems so Bon Apetit!
