SATA Vs. EIDE?

I am hopefully upgrading my computer within the next few weeks to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 and also need to get a new hard drive. I have thought about going SATA instead of EIDE. I was wondering is there any difference in setup, and can you use a EIDE with it? I have everything backed up on my 40 Gig which is EIDE as is my 120 Gig, but my 120 is going out (clicks and whines all the time now and likes to freeze when doing things, all the time). Is it possible to use SATA and EIDE together?

Re: SATA Vs. EIDE?

Yes.

Any motherboard you buy will still have IDE ports, and most will have SATA ports.

Re: SATA Vs. EIDE?

Ok, thanks. Most mobo's that I have seen have 2 ide slots, but some have one.

Re: SATA Vs. EIDE?

I haven't seen any with only one. Although I guess some new Hi-po ones might.

Re: SATA Vs. EIDE?

Motherboards that only have one IDE port are for optical drives, because they've only just started going to SATA.

If your 120gb drive is on the way out, don't trust it with any data, back it all up onto DVD, removable drive or network drive.

If your only remaining hard drive is 40gb, it's hardly worth saving - go with new SATA drives for the better cabling and airflow.

Re: SATA Vs. EIDE?

I am backing things up to the 40 gig, not the 120. Ive been working on computers long enough to know not to leave it on the 120. I've just been out of the computer industry for 6 - 8 months and I'm looking at getting back in. So much has changed, and I havent ever worked with sata yet either. I figured the mobo's with 1 eide port were for optical's. I am just wondering because I will then buy a 200 gig sata, and then get everything off of the 40 gig. Thats why I wanted to know it the 2 forms were able to be used together. Will the sata be the primary over the eide then?

Depends on if you set it up that way. You can have the IDE be the primary if you choose.

Would that be a cmos setting then, or a jumper?

Not even sure. I've just come back to computers, and most of my work was on older ones...PIII, PII, Celron, PI, etc. They all had the jumpers.

Re: SATA Vs. EIDE?

well there are still a few jumpers left on most mobos but they are used for rare operations. Like the Clear Cmos jumper or the overvoltage jumper on the DFIs.

As far as mobos with only 1 IDE its mostly the newer intel chipset ones. Intel is often trying to dump legacy connectors as early as possible.

Re: SATA Vs. EIDE?

Not just Intel. I won't go with Intel, so I haven't even bothered looking at Intel, or its boards. Everything that I have looked at is either Socket 939 or Socet AM2. I have found single EIDE ports on both. What is a DFI?

A manufacturer of motherboards.

If your going AMD, go AM2. Socket 939 is just as expensive, and there is room for upgrade if you go with a lower level AM2 processor like the X2 3600+ or something. I saw that on Newegg for $85 with free shipping and almost bought it...
