identifying engine by vin????

I have just purchased a 1993 2500 diesel pickup with no engine.. I'm trying to figure out what engine was in it .I have the owners manual and it says that it can be identified by a letter in the vin in the glove box.. Problem is that there are two possibilities (c and f) ..Anyone know the placement of the letter for engine ident?? c is the third and the f is near the middle..

8th digit in the Vin is the engine code.
