Need CV doctor

I am wondering if any body ever had a problm similar to the one I have that could help me solve my problem on my crown vic.

I have a 1998 P71 police intercepter that stalls when I drove in to a pool of water. When it dies, the Track Control light comes on, when I try to move the car, you can hear the fuel pump soleniod click on & off, and the fuel pump running and the car starts. I had it over to the Ford dealer several times, they runn it through the scanner, and said everything is OK except for the track control motor. They even had the alternator, belts & filters changed. I had the track motor change from a same police unit and still the same problem. Cost me over seven hundred bucks for a problem they can't fix.

Anyway, it happen again last week only this time, the car is not wet. The car starts, but when it moves, it dies out. If I turn on the ignition, and try to move the car, the fuel solenoid clicks on & off. To me it feel like the fuel pump got some loose connection or defact because when the fuel moves, the pump is cut off & on. Especially when I punch the car up & down.

I ahve read some of your crown vic owner's problems and nothing similar to mine. I have check wiring, as mentions in some of your suggestions and still OK. I have check connections to computor, fuel pump & relays, front fender by the battery, grounds, and nothing seems to be loose. I am just about to pull the fuel pump out my self. i affraid to take it back to the Ford Dealer for you know what. So, if somebody can offer some suggestion before I start tearing the pump down would be very appreciated.

Williep - I don't for sure what's wrong but I do have a couple of suggestions...

- Try replacing the fuel pump relay. As a test, you can use one of the other relays in the distribution box to see if it helps. If it does, buy a new relay.

- Check the connection and the status of the rollover switch (the switch that shuts off fuel in the event of a rollover of the car in an accident). A bad or intermittent switch *might* cause the problem you describe.

I'll keep thinking but that's all that comes to mind at the moment...

A couple of things


YOu should only hear the fuel pump click on for a few seconds when the key is in the run position. then it will click off... If you turn the key on and off you will hear the fuel pump each time..


The IAC valve.... It causes the vehicle to stall... usually after the car is warmed up it will run ok.... But when you first start it you usually have to keep your foot on the brake and gas then put it in gear to get it to move otherwise it will stall... 50 dollar part very easy to change

I have read several posts regarding the fuel pumps.... And they all state that many Police Officers let the vehicle idle for hours without alot of gas in the tank and it causes the fuel pump to get hot, which damages it...

Your problem is indeed in the wiring. However to find it, you will need a good wiring diagram and a meter and test light. We have run into that 4 or 5 times and it has been a corroded wire or connection each time. The problem is the wires have been in a different place on every car. By any chance , does the little temperature icon come on? If the temperature icon lights up, check your coils closely.

Thank you guys for pointing out some of stuff to check out first. I have already switch the relays and it didn't solve the problem. I check all connections in the engine compartment even the groungs under the engine, front chassis, they are OK. unless there is another one I miss would be glad if you could piont it out. I don't know if the fuel shut off switch in the trunk could cause the problem, but how can i tell if this switch is defact.
